Understanding Internet Protocols

The Internet has become a global phenomenon due to its ability to connect people from any corner of the world. Through the Internet people are able to share information and communicate with others from anywhere by using an Internet connection. In fact, the Internet is one of the largest communication networks, which helps us share information all around the world. As far as communication is concerned, the Internet has proven to be very useful tool with several advantages. It has reduced the costs involved in international travelling, and at the same time, it is also used for online shopping.

One of the most important factors about the Internet is its data packets. Data packets are the pieces of information that are transmitted from one computer to another computer. Every packet of data is known as a ‘piece’ of data. Packets of data include the addresses of the servers, web pages, e-mails and other information. With the help of internet protocol, internet transport control protocol and transport layer, we can make sure that the data packets do not get lost or corrupted.

Whenever a new connection is established or a traffic change is going on, there is an associated increase in the amount of traffic that is being put into the internet. The amount of data that is put into the network is known as TCP packets. A TCP packet is defined as a frame of data that is received on any connection for which it is acting as an intermediary agent. In order to make sure that the packets of data are delivered properly, the TCP system ensures that there are multiplexers and broadcast receivers that will help in managing the traffic on the network. There are basically four types of protocols used in the TCP/IP networking: TCP-based, IP-based, IS-based and header-switching systems.

An IP-based internet protocol has two types – IP packets and IS-based packets. IP packets are unique to each host and they contain the addresses of one or more hosts on the internet. These packets will go through an IP-based gateway which is another component which helps in forwarding the packets and arriving at their destination. On the other hand, an IS-based system is based on the packet switching technology. The IS system has its own routing protocol that is implemented within the same network and it forwards the packets to the required destination.

An IP-based system is widely used in the corporate world and it has become very easy to use because it does not require a large investment. This type of internet connection is fast and reliable and it allows several computers to connect to one router. Although this is the most commonly used system, some people who do not have large investments choose the IS-based internet connection because of the greater level of reliability it offers. IS-based internet connections do not need any type of gateway and it allows the computers on the internet to communicate with each other even when the computers are located on different networks.

There are several types of internet services that can be obtained using IP technology. An IP phone allows several users to make phone calls through internet phone services. Another form is called IS-hiring whereby an individual can hire an IS-based internet service provider (ISP) which enables them to create their own internet phone service and can connect other computers to this service provider instead of using their own phone line. IS-hiring also allows computers on the internet to connect to each other using various protocols such as GPRS, EDGE or TACOM. GPRS can be used as a standard protocol that can be used for computer-to-computer communication but only with the help of an IS-based system.
